Mike's review

Visited 2023

I would put the garden in a morning if the trip has room and give it two or three hours. I went on a damp afternoon and forgot insect repellent. I left covered in mosquito bites. Bring water and repellent, and buy admission online if you want to pay by card. On-site payment currently takes PIX or cash.

From the source

Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro sits between Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas and the base of Corcovado. Prince Regent Dom João founded it in 1808 beside the Royal Gunpowder Factory, first to acclimatize spices and other plants arriving through the Portuguese colonies. It remains a federal botanical research institute as well as a public garden.

The main visitor route passes the Avenue of Imperial Palms, the Japanese Garden, the cactus collection, the orchid greenhouse, lakes and remains of the gunpowder factory. The grounds are mostly flat and humid. Corcovado rises behind the garden, but this is not an access route to Christ the Redeemer.
