About

St Mary's Basilica predates Kraków's 1257 city plan, which is why it sits at an angle to the square instead of lining up neatly with it. The present church is mostly 14th-century Gothic. Inside, the main draw is Veit Stoss's enormous late-15th-century altarpiece, with Jan Matejko's starry decoration overhead. The hourly hejnał bugle call comes from the taller tower. Tourist visits fit around services, so check the day's access before going inside.
