Mike’s notes
Chaco has three passenger rail services with very different operating patterns. The Puerto Tirol train is a weekday metropolitan route through Cacuí into Resistencia. Los Amores to Cacuí and Sáenz Peña to Chorotis are long rural services with only a small number of departures.
The western route follows the former state railway built inland from Barranqueras toward Salta. The track shaped the settlement of Presidencia Roque Sáenz Peña. Its first station opened in 1915, and the larger building still in use opened in 1939. Cotton moved through the station in such volume that Sáenz Peña became the country's principal cotton center. The two station buildings are now a National Historic Monument.
The metropolitan section between Cacuí and Resistencia returned on August 3, 2020 after a three-year suspension. Service has since been extended west to Puerto Tirol. Another interruption affected the Chaco routes in April 2025, and the current operator sheets took effect later in 2025. The date printed on each timetable is important here.
SUBE works on all three routes. Paper tickets are also sold at the Resistencia, Cacuí, and Sáenz Peña ticket offices or aboard the train. A contactless bank card is not listed as an alternative to SUBE.
Diesel railcars operate on the meter-gauge Belgrano network. The operator does not publish a station-by-station accessibility standard, and many rural stops have short platforms, limited shelter, or no staffed building. A return train may not run until the next day on the outer routes.
