HŽPP Passenger Rail HŽPP Zagreb to Rijeka

The Zagreb to Rijeka line connects the capital with Karlovac, Ogulin, Gorski kotar towns including Delnice and Fužine, and the port city of Rijeka. Local and intercity trains share the corridor, so not every departure serves all 47 stops.

Zagreb reached Karlovac by rail in 1865. The difficult mountain section from Karlovac to Rijeka opened in 1873, completing the historic inland route to the port.

Buy a ticket for a specific train through HŽPP’s website or app, at a station office or machine, or from the conductor. Domestic e-tickets are 10 percent cheaper than the standard station fare, while onboard purchase costs 10 percent more. There is no contactless bank-card tap-in system or gated metro fare. The mountain railway is winding and slower than its map distance suggests. HŽPP uses a mixed fleet of electric trains and locomotive-hauled stock, so climate control, seating, and onboard facilities depend on the departure.

HŽPP lists mobile wheelchair lifts at Zagreb Glavni kolodvor and Rijeka, with assistance requested at least 24 hours ahead. Low-floor boarding cannot be assumed at the many small stations through Gorski kotar. HŽPP publishes its assistance procedure and lift locations here.
