HŽPP Passenger Rail HŽPP Zagreb to Varaždin

The Zagreb to Varaždin line connects the capital’s western suburbs with Zaprešić, Zabok, the Hrvatsko Zagorje towns, Novi Marof, and Varaždin. It is a regional route with many stops, not a fast intercity shortcut.

The railway from the Zagreb area through Zagorje toward Varaždin and Čakovec opened in 1886. Its winding alignment still explains the long journey compared with the road distance.

Buy a ticket for a specific train through HŽPP’s website or app, at a station office or machine, or from the conductor. Domestic e-tickets are 10 percent cheaper than the standard station fare, while onboard purchase costs 10 percent more. There is no contactless bank-card tap-in system or gated metro fare. Regional departures use HŽPP’s mixed electric and diesel fleet, including modern low-floor units on some services. Air-conditioning, toilets, and step-free boarding depend on the assigned rolling stock, and weekday commuter trains can be crowded near Zagreb.

HŽPP lists mobile wheelchair lifts at Zagreb Glavni kolodvor and Varaždin and requires assistance requests at least 24 hours ahead. Many intermediate platforms are low, so a low-floor train does not guarantee level boarding. HŽPP publishes its assistance procedure and lift locations here.
