Mike’s notes

HŽPP’s useful visitor routes radiate from Zagreb toward Split, Rijeka, Osijek, Vukovar, and Varaždin. A separate regional railway crosses Istria between Pula and Buzet. The map is larger than the service pattern, and some lines have only a few useful departures.

Principal routes

Zagreb to Split crosses Karlovac, Lika, Gračac Railway Station, Knin, and inland Dalmatia. The journey is scenic but slow, and some trains require a €1.06 seat reservation.

Zagreb to Rijeka climbs through Gorski kotar by way of Karlovac, Ogulin, Delnice, and Fužine. Zagreb to Osijek takes the northern route through Bjelovar, Virovitica, and Našice. Zagreb to Vukovar follows the main Slavonian corridor through Slavonski Brod and Vinkovci.

Zagreb to Varaždin is a stopping regional service through Zaprešić, Zabok, and Novi Marof. Pula to Buzet serves inland Istria but has no direct domestic rail connection onward to Rijeka or Zagreb.

Tickets and payment

Domestic tickets are sold on the HŽPP website and app, at staffed stations and machines, and by conductors. Online and app tickets cost 10 percent less than the station-office price. Buying on board costs 10 percent more.

This is a conventional railway, not a tap-in metro. Contactless bank cards are used to pay online where supported, but there is no network-wide bank-card validator at the platform. International tickets follow separate rules and are not currently sold through the HŽPP online shop.

Trains, accessibility, and disruption

The fleet ranges from modern low-floor electric and diesel multiple units to older locomotive-hauled and tilting trains. HŽPP reports 70 low-floor trains in service, but vehicle allocation varies by route and departure. Climate control, bicycle space, toilets, and level boarding should be checked for the chosen train rather than assumed.

Passengers who need mobility assistance should contact HŽPP at least 24 hours ahead. Mobile wheelchair lifts are listed at Zagreb, Rijeka, Split, Osijek, Slavonski Brod, Vinkovci, Varaždin, and several other major stations. Smaller stations can have low platforms and no staff.

Engineering work regularly brings replacement buses. Check the live timetable and service notices by train number shortly before departure, especially on the long routes and in Istria.
