London is the capital and largest city of England and the United Kingdom, with a population of 9.1 million people in 2024. Its wider metropolitan area is the largest in Western Europe, with a population of 15.1 million. London stands on the River Thames in southeast England, at the head of a 50-mile (80 km) tidal estuary down to the North Sea, and has been a major settlement for nearly 2,000 years. Its ancient core and financial centre, the City of London, was founded by the Romans as Londinium and has retained its medieval boundaries. The City of Westminster, to the west of the City of London, has been the site of the national government and parliament for centuries. Visit London for museums, theater, concert life, archives, bookshops, parks, and the density of distinct neighborhoods. The British Museum, National Gallery, Tate, Southbank Centre, Royal Opera House, British Library, West End theaters, and smaller venues each belong to different versions of the city. A strong itinerary should be organized by area, not by fame: pair one major institution with a neighborhood walk, a church, a market, or an evening performance.
London is not a good city for a rushed checklist. Distances are large, transport can be expensive, and crossing the city repeatedly will wear down even a strong itinerary. Plan by neighborhood and book major exhibitions, theater, opera, and concerts early. The city can also feel crowded, costly, and weather-frayed. Rain is rarely dramatic but often inconvenient, and hotels can be poor value. If you want an easy compact city break, choose one area of London and treat everything else as optional.

June through August are the period when heat, daylight, crowds, or humidity most affect a visit to London. Summer is usually mild enough for walking, with changeable weather rather than severe heat. In London, heat management is part of cultural planning: walk early, pause indoors, and return outside when the light softens. Use this season in London when the extra light or landscape access is part of the reason to go. Do not assume London is busiest culturally when it is busiest with visitors.
December through February are the cooler or wetter period in London. Winter in London asks for an interior-led plan rather than a wide outdoor route. For London, ask how much the season limits walking, transport, and day trips, not just what the thermometer says. Use this period in London for close looking indoors, then add outdoor sections when weather and daylight cooperate. In London, keep outdoor plans shorter, check hours carefully, and use a taxi or rideshare when weather or late returns make transit less attractive.
