About
Porta del Popolo occupies the ancient northern entrance to Rome, where the Via Flaminia met the Aurelian Walls. The outer facade was rebuilt between 1562 and 1565 by Nanni di Baccio Bigio after Michelangelo transferred the commission. Bernini redesigned the inner face for Christina of Sweden's ceremonial arrival in 1655. The gate opens directly into Piazza del Popolo.
