Piazza del Popolo

Piazza del Popolo is the large elliptical square just inside the northern gate of Rome's historic center. Giuseppe Valadier gave it its present form in the early nineteenth century, organizing the space around the Flaminian Obelisk and the twin churches at the start of the Trident streets. The Lion Fountains surround the obelisk. The Fontana della Dea Roma and Fontana del Nettuno close the east and west sides. The square links the Pincian Hill, Via del Corso and Via del Babuino.
