Line 5 runs from Plaza de Maipú through Quinta Normal and the historic center to Vicente Valdés. It bends around central Santiago rather than following one straight avenue.

The first section opened in 1997. Later extensions reached Quinta Normal, Maipú, and Vicente Valdés, turning it into a long cross-city line with several distinct travel markets.

San Pablo connects with Line 1. Santa Ana connects with Line 2, Plaza de Armas with Line 3, Baquedano with Line 1, Ñuble with Line 6, and Vicente Valdés with Line 4.

Quinta Normal is the Metro stop for the park and its museums. Plaza de Armas serves the cathedral and central square. Baquedano is useful for the edge of Bellavista, though the station complex can be crowded.

Some trains may not cover the complete line during disruptions or late operations. Read the destination display rather than treating every westbound train as a through service to Maipú.

The integrated Metro fare applies. Step-free routes exist at the major interchanges, but the path between lines can be long and may depend on a particular lift.
