Mike’s notes
VLT Carioca serves Rio de Janeiro. VLT Carioca fills the downtown gaps between the metro, TrensRJ, ferries, long-distance buses, cruise port, and Santos Dumont Airport.
The first line opened in 2016 as part of the port-area street reconstruction. Later routes added the Central, Praça XV, Rodoviária, and Terminal Gentileza links.
Riding the network
Validate with the current Jaé fare system before or immediately after boarding as directed. The VLT uses proof-of-payment checks rather than metro-style gates at every stop.
Current rolling stock and ride conditions: Low-floor electric trams run in streets and reserved lanes without overhead wires across much of the center.
Santos Dumont, Cinelândia, Carioca, Central, Praça XV, Rodoviária, and Terminal Gentileza are the main anchors.
Accessibility: Stops have low platforms and level boarding. Street crossings and broken lifts at connecting systems can still affect the full trip.
Downtown events and street works can alter routes. Read the line number and destination because several services share central track.
Check VLT Carioca for the dated operating notice before a time-sensitive trip.
