Phnom Penh is Cambodia's capital for riverfront movement, markets, food, royal sites, and heavy twentieth-century history. It works when the trip can hold both daily city life and the harder memorial stops.

When to avoid

Bon Om Touk, Cambodia's three-day Water Festival, falls on the November full moon and draws up to two million visitors to Phnom Penh's riverfront for boat races and fireworks. Crowd crush is a documented risk there: a stampede on the Koh Pich (Diamond Island) bridge on November 22, 2010 killed at least 347 people and injured hundreds more. The festival still runs every year with similarly dense crowds on the same riverfront bridges.

About Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh is the capital and most populous city of Cambodia. It has been the national capital since 1865 and has grown to become the nation's primate city and its political, economic, industrial, and cultural centre. The city's name derives from Wat Phnom, a Buddhist temple, and Lady Penh, the city's founder. It sits at the confluence of the Tonlé Sap and Mekong rivers, and is the start of the Bassac River. It is also the seat of Cambodia's monarchy, based at the Royal Palace.
